WRDA pushes for more women in politics

23rd September 2014

Last week, WRDA gave a briefing to the Assembly and Executive Review Committee on the barriers blocking women from entering politics and how to remove them so many more can make it through.

Our Director Anne McVicker briefed the Committee on 16th September, accompanied by Lynn Carville of WOMEN’STEC and Annie Campbell from the Women’s Aid Federation (all pictured right). They put forward a wide range of suggestions on how to get more women involved in politics and public life, including the introduction of quotas, mentoring and job sharing, which would see two individuals run for the same election place.

You can read a transcript of their presentation or watch a video of it. There is also an article on the session in the latest issue of our newsletter, which will dropping through letterboxes this week.

Anne, Lynn and Annie were delighted with the positive reception they received from the Committee, which has been hearing from groups across Northern Ireland as part of a general review of women’s role in politics. Sumissions for the review are still being sought.
