WRDA joined women from across Northern Ireland in Corrs Corner Hotel late last month to discuss women’s role in peacebuilding. We attended Women on the Verge, a peacebuilding conference held on 19th August by the CAN PEACE Partnership, which consists of the Carrickfergus, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Councils and is supported by the EU European Regional Development Fund. The event was focused around three excellent speakers, Dawn Purvis, Rev Dr Lesley Carroll (pictured left) and Eibhlín Glenholmes, who shared wisdom gained from their own experiences of peacebuilding in Northern Ireland and called for more to be done to ensure women have their fair say in policy making and creating a lasting peace. An extended Q&A session followed, with questions from the audience covering a huge range of topics, including UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security and whether introducing quotas could help tackle shameful lack of women in local politics.WRDA hopes similar events will follow in future.
